Summary
The Gyeokpohang was designated as a national fishing harbor on March 1, 1986. The national fishing harbor refers to the harbor that is located in a port, island, or remote area throughout the country, which is required for developing a fishing ground and evacuating fishing ships, and is designated by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The Geokpohang is one of two national fishing harbors located in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, together with the Wido Port.
Background of Construction
The Gyeokpohang Fish Market was built to sell fish products from the Gyeokpohang in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do and contribute to the increase of revenue for fishermen. The Gyeokpo Region Development Council, consisting of local fishermen, established the market under the condition of the land donation to the national land owned by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in the Gyeokpohang, a national fishing harbor. Thus, the land of the market is used free of charge from October 1, 2010 to October 1, 2023, then will be donated to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
Development
The construction of the Gyeokpohang Fish Market began on September 11, 2009 and completed on August 20, 2010. The market was opened on October 1, 2010.
Composition
The Gyeokpohang Fish Market is a reinforced concrete building with two stories above ground. The fishery retail shops are situated on the first floor with an area of 785.83㎡, while restaurants on the second floor have an area of 536.23㎡.
Current Status
The Gyeokpo Region Development Council is in charge of the operation and management of the market. The fish market consists of 26 stores, which mainly sell live fish, including webfoot octopus in spring, gizzard shad in autumn, and seasonal seafood products, such as mussels caught at sea, surf clams, egg cockles, and oysters. The neighboring tourist attractions include Chaeseokgang, the Saemangeum Embankment, and Byeonsanbando National Park.
