Definition
A market for fisheries located in Jinseo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Background of Construction
Gomso, the town where the Gomsohang Fisheries Wholesale Market is located, used to consist of a series of small islands until Julpo Port was shut down and filled with mud, and Gomso Port was constructed by building an embankment which connected the town with nearby uninhabited islands, including Beomseom and Kkachiseom, in 1942.
As it had a lighter’s wharf and other facilities, Gomso Port was designated as a national fishing harbor and Type 2 fishing port on April 12, 1972. However, its role as a fishing port was seriously impeded by the accumulation of silt, and it was downgraded to a Type 2 fishing port on March 1, 1986. A few years later, many small stores were established in Gomso Port and a market sprang up, and the old Gomso traditional market has now become the Gomsohang Fisheries Wholesale Market.
Current Status
The Gomsohang Fisheries Wholesale Market consists of about forty stores that sell local special products such as dried fish and seafood, fermented seafood products, and other fresh fish and seafood (young hair tail, beltfish, tongue sole, prawn, swimming crab, mudskipper, ocean quahog, etc.). It is shop-closing day on the second Tuesday of each month. Along with the Gomso Marine Product Shopping Center, opened in May 2013, the Gomsohang Fisheries Wholesale Market has become a major logistics base for clean fish products. Its coastal retaining wall was renovated as part of a project to improve the surrounding environment from 2017 to 2019. The market is an important local tourist attraction that links with Gomso Port’s tourism resources, including its famous sunset, tideland, and the nearby Gomso Salt Farm, attracting many visitors to Gomso and the Byeonsan Peninsula.
