Development
Julpo Daily Market shares much of its history with Julpojang Market. Along with Buanjang Market, Julpojang Market has maintained its reputation as the two major marketplaces in Buan County, North Jeolla province. The opening of Julpojang Market was closely related to the boom and bust of Julpo Port. In its earlier days, the market opened on every third and eighth day of the month but the date changed to the first and sixth. Jupojang Market had thrived in the heyday of Julpo Port until the 1950s when the accumulated sediment in the sea lowered the sea level, which led to the decay of the port. Out of the vestiges of Julpojang Market, Julpo Daily Market opened in 1965 and has remained open to this day. In 1995, the facilities there were built, and in 2008, the market was designated as a Traditional Market.
Composition
As of June, 2020, Julpo Daily Market covers 5,410 ㎡ in total area, with 2,100 ㎡ in building area and 2,005 ㎡ in store floor area.
Current Status
As of June 2020, the number of shops numbers 30, and the number of merchants is 39. Of the merchants, 34 are store owners and 5 are employees. Main items sold at the market include pickled fish, fresh fish, and other food products. The average number of customers per day is about 50. The market does not offer promotions to boost activity in the commercial zone. There are no competing corporate supermarkets or shopping complexes in its vicinity of 500 meters, but there are tourist attractions and cultural, administrative and educational institutions nearby. Located about 5 minutes from the Julpo Intercity Bus Terminal, the market is easily accessible. In a town adjacent to the newly developed Saemangeum reclaimed land, the market has great growth potential being connected to major attractions nearby.
