Summary
National Road No. 77 is a general national road connecting the south, north and west of the country. The expressway starts from Jung-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, then passes through Busan Metropolitan City, Gyeongsangnam-do [Changwon-si, Goseong-gun, Tongyeong-si, Sacheon-si, Namhae-gun], Jeollanam-do[Yeosu-si, Goheung-gun, Boseong-gun, Gangjin-gun, Wando-gun, Haenam-gun, Sinan-gun, Muan-gun, Yeonggwang-gun], Jeollabuk-do [Gochang-gun, Buan-gun, Gunsan-si], South Chungcheong province [Seocheon-gun, Boryeong-si, Taean-gun, Seosan-si, Dangjin-si, Asan-si], Gyeonggi province [Pyeongtaek-si, Hwaseong-si, Ansan-si, Siheung-si], Incheon Metropolitan City, Gyeonggi province [Bucheon-si], Seoul Metropolitan City, Gyeonggi province [Goyang-si], and ends in Munsan-eup, Paju-si in Gyeonggi province. The section that passes by Buan-gun includes stops at the Saemangeum Seawall and Byeonsan Peninsula, which overlaps with National Expressway No. 30.
Origin of the Name
Using the names of the starting point Busan and the end point Paju, the road was called the “Busan ~ Paju Line.” The number of the north-south bound road was given the odd number 77. Originally, the expressway was called the “Busan ~ Incheon Line” ending in Dong-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City, but after Jayu-ro was included at the end of 2008, the destination changed from Dong-gu, Incheon to Munsan-eup, Paju-si in Gyeonggi province. Subsequently, the name was changed to the “Busan ~ Paju Line”.

National Road No. 77 or Busan ~ Paju Line measures 1,258.14 ㎞ in total length, of which the passenger car-only section measures 701.31 ㎞ with an overlapping stretch 556.83 ㎞ in length and a 74.79 ㎞ stretch closed to traffic. Along the passenger car-only section, which measures 701.31 ㎞ in total length, a 2-lane stretch is 413.329 ㎞; a 4-lane stretch, 131.93 ㎞; a 6-lane stretch, 35.34 ㎞; an 8-lane stretch, 33.11 ㎞; and an over 10 lane stretch, 12.8㎞. The section in Jeollabuk-do measures 75.29 ㎞, of which a 2-lane stretch is 64.19 ㎞; a 4-lane stretch, 24.43 ㎞; a 6-lane stretch, 39.77 ㎞; and a 11.1 ㎞ stretch is closed. The section in Buan measures 35.5 ㎞ in length, most of which follows the Saemangeum Seawall areas.
Background of Construction
The L-shaped road along the Western and Southern coast of the Korean Peninsula was constructed to gain accessibility to coastal areas. 
Development
National Road No. 77 connecting Busan Metropolitan City and Incheon Metropolitan City newly opened on August 25, 2001. The additional section Jayu-ro was added on November 11, 2008 and the name was changed to the “Busan ~ Paju Line”.
Current Status
Most of the 35.59 ㎞-long section in Buan follows the Saemangeum Seawall, and National Road No. 77 converges with National Road No. 30 to encircle Byeonsan Peninsula. The south of Byeonsan Peninsula will be connected to Haeri-myeon, Gochang-gun via a road bridge.
