Summary
The state-managed coastal port refers to ports deemed as vital in terms of national security, coastal management, or evacuation plans using ships based on contingencies due to deteriorating weather conditions. As of January 2021, a total of 11 ports – Yonggipo Port, Yeonpyeongdo Port, Sangwangdeungdo Port, Heuksando Port, Gageohangni Port, Geomundo Port, Gukdo Port, Hupo Port, Ulleung Port, Chuja Port, and Hwasun Port – have been designated as state-managed costal ports. Among them, Sangwangdeungdo Port located in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do is considered as vital for national security and coastal management due to its position as an island port on territorial waters in the exclusive economic zone off the mid-Western coast of the Korea Peninsula.
Natural Environment
The average temperature in the Sangwangdeungdo Port area is 12.5℃ with 36.6℃ at the highest and –19.2℃ at the lowest, with a wind speed of 14.5 ㎧ and the main wind direction heading southeast. With an annual average precipitation is 1,222.8 ㎜, the tide level reaches 6.79 m, which is the control average high tide level, the low tide falls to -0.42m, and the average sea level is 0.0m. 
Background of Construction
Sangwangdeungdo Port is a strategic port built for coastal management on the mid-western coast of the Korean Peninsula. The port was developed to ensure the safe travels of fishing boats, the protection of the lives and property of residents engaged in fishing, and the improvement of life and conveniences for local residents with the development and expansion of fishery-based infrastructure and facilities.
Development
In 1963 the port, formerly part of Wido-myeon, Yeonggwang-gun, became part of Wido-myeon, Buan-gun. In 1972, the port was designated as a provincial port. In 2012, the port was designated as a state-managed coastal port, and in August of the same year, the basic construction plan to make it a state-managed port was initiated. In December 2013, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8 of the Port Act, the Basic Plan for Coastal Ports (2014-2020) Port Management by the State was announced [Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Notice No. 2013-267].
Composition
Sangwangdeungdo Port has a water surface area of 432,000 sq. meters, a calm water surface area of 302,400 sq. meters, a water depth of 15 meters, a breakwater on the south side of 165 meters, a water length of 80 meters, a dock 20 meters, and a waterfront of 60 meters. Safety facilities include guard-rails, sea barriers, danger warning signs, and lifesaving gear, while the number of fishing boats numbers 15.
Current Status
Sangwangdeungdo Port, the only port on Sangwangdeungdo Island, connects the island to the surrounding lands and functions as a fishery base. The port is 18 km away from Wido Port, the next closest port, and about 32 km away from Gyeokpo Port. Between Sangwangdeungdo Port and Gyeokpo is a cruiseliner operating two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The ship departs Sangwangdeungdo Island at 11:30 a.m. and Gyeokpo at 9:35 a.m. As a fishery base, Sangwangdeungdo Port boasts the Chilsan Fishing Ground as its main fishing ground inhabited by Japanese mackerel, halibut and sea bass.
