Definition
A maritime tourist attraction using the cruise ship sailing from the Gyeokpohang Port in Gyeokpo-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Origins and Development
The operation of the Gyeokpo Excursion Boat began in 1997 and continues today.
Gyeokpohang Port and Cruise Ship
The Gyeokpohang Port, which has been selected as “one of the 100 most beautiful fishing villages in Korea” by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, is the center of maritime transportation connecting the surrounding western islands of Korea. As it is also a production area of various kinds of fish and seafood, many raw fish and seafood restaurants are located around the port, attracting tourists and gourmets. The Gyeokpo Breakwater is a trick art photo zone, which leads to the white lighthouse, where various attractions of Buan are painted on the ground. The Gyeokpo Ferry Terminal is located in the plaza between the Gyeokpohang Port and the Gyeokpo Breakwater.
Cruise Ship’s Sailing Course
The Gyeokpo Excursion Boat sails for about 50 minutes, departing from the Gyeokpohang Port to the Jeolla Jwasuyeong (Remaining Naval Headquarters) Filming Location, the Buan Byeonsan Yacht Center, Gaeseom Island, the Jeokbyeokgang River, and the Saja Rock, then it returns. After leaving the Gyeokpohang Port and sailing toward Gunghang in the south, passengers will find the Jeolla Jwasuyeong (Remaining Naval Headquarters) Filming Location, which was used for the Korean TV series, Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-sin. As the filming location has a terraced topography, passengers can enjoy the entire view of the attraction, which is surrounded by a mountain at the back and the sea at the front. The pavilion built on the fortress, situated below the filming set, offers an open view of the sea. The next destination of the ship is the Buan Byeonsan Yacht Center, which is located on the way to Gaeseom Island. When a yacht race is held, special events, such as watching the race from the cruise ship, are provided.
Gaeseom Island is about 200 meters away from the Yacht Center in the south. As a small island that is adjacent to the sea of the Gunghang Village, Gaeseom Island resembles the shape of an arrowhead. When the tide is out, the cement pavement appears, connecting the Gunghang Village to Gaeseom Island. Sometimes a fisherman misses the tide time and is isolated on the island. When he Cruise Ship changes its direction toward the north and sails up about 2 kilometers beyond the Gyeokpohang Port, it arrives at Jeokbyeokgang River with the backdrop of a red coastal cliff. The Jeokbyeokgang River was named after the Chinese river with the same name because the river’s scenery resembles that of the Chinese one, like Chaeseokgang River (which was also named after the Chinese river with the same name). The Cruise Ship goes around the river and along the coastal line. It continues to the Saja Rock, which resembles the image of a lion (saja) sitting crouched on the rock.
Cruise Ship Operating Information
The cruise fare is KRW 15,000 for an adult and KRW 5,000 for a child. It sails about three times a day, and during the off season, it is required that one makes an inquiry for sailing in advance. In particular, Jeokbyeokgang River and the Gyeokpohang Port are well known for their splendid sunset views, so visitors can appreciate the beautiful sunset from the cruise ship at the right time of the tide and sunset.
