Summary
The national fishing harbor refers to the harbor that is located in a port, island or remote area throughout the country, which is required for developing a fishing ground and evacuating fishing ships. It is designated by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and as of 2020, 113 ports were designated as national fishing harbors in Korea. Seven national fishing harbors, including Eocheongdo Port, Yeondo Port, Maldo Port, Gaeyado Port, Gyeokpo Port, Wido Port, and Gusipo Port, are located in Jeollabuk-do and among them, the Gyeokpo Port and the Wido Port belong to Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. The Gyeokpo Port, the largest port in the Byeonsan Peninsula, is not only a fishing port, but also a passenger port.
Natural Environment
The temperature of the Gyeokpo Port area is 32 ℃ at the highest and -1 ℃ at the lowest, making the average 15.7 ℃. The average wind speed in the area is 4.0㎧, and the main wind direction is northwest. Its average annual precipitation is 1,240 ㎜. Regarding the tides in the area, the high water during ordinary spring tide is 6.478 meters, while the low water during ordinary spring tide is 0.582 meters. Its mean sea level is 3.53 meters.
Background of Construction
The Gyeokpo Port was built to anchor fishing boats safely, reel in catches smoothly, increase the income of fishermen, and establish the basis of the development of local community.
Development
The development of Gyeopo Port began in 1975, and the data survey was conducted in 1985. The port was designated as a national fishing harbor on March 1, 1986, and its breakwater and the lighters wharf was built in 1996. The basic design and working design of a multi-functional fishing port were carried out in 2005, while the construction of the multi-functional fishing port was implemented from 2007 to 2011. The maintenance and dredging construction of Gyeokpo Port were carried out in 2014, and the maintenance work was completed in December 2015. Then, from July 2017 to 2020, the port was transformed into a multipurpose fishing port that is equipped with fishing and landscape facilities, through the project to build a beautiful fishing port.
Composition
The water area inside the Gyeokpo Port is 244,000 ㎡, the calm water area is 186,000 ㎡, and the water depth inside the port is 4.5 m. The lighters wharf is 320 m, the south breakwater is 380 m, the north breakwater is 610 m, the slipway is 30 m, and the revetment is 335 m. The port is equipped with safety measures, such as a guardrail, a barrier, and 12 warning panels. Its lifesaving equipment includes 9 warning panels and 9 rescue tubes. The landscape and scenic facilities are Sunset Park, Somang Park, Chaeseokgang Gallery, a Parking Lot & Shelter, etc.
Current Status
As of 2020, the population engaged in fishing business, based in the Gyeokpo Port consisting of 747 people of 231 households. The maximum daily number of incoming and outgoing ships is 215 local ships and 35 foreign ships. The annual fishery production is 3,000 tons and the amount of production is KRW 6,249,000,000. The main fish species are blue crab, flatfish, webfoot octopus, shrimp, cuttlefish, and so on. The cruise ship operates from Sikdo to Wido and Gyeokpo six times a day at the Gyeokpo Port. Around the Gyeokpo Port are the Gyeokpo Fire House, the Byeonsan Police Box of the Buan Coast Guard Station, Gyeokpo Port Fish Market, and others. The neighboring tourist attractions include Chaeseokgang, Jeokbyeokgang River, and Gyeokpo Beach, which are Buan’s major tourist destinations, while the commercial facilities are also located in the area.
