A market in Seooi-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Background of Construction
In Buan County, North Jeolla province, there were two regularly held markets in Buan-eup where Buan Daily Market stands today since the late Joseon dynasty. One was known as "Witjang," which means "market above," held on the second and seventh day of each month, and the other "Araetjang," which means "market below," held on the fourth and ninth day of each month. Both markets were held every five days, but since there were other competing markets nearby, it was actually held every two or three days. The two markets "above and below" continued to stay open through the Japanese colonial period at the same location. As the population increased, the commercial zone was also expanded. "Witjang" earned a new name, "Gusijang," which means "old market," and "Araetjang" "Sinsijang," which means "new market." In Buan-gun, there was another market called "Baeksanjang" in Yonggye-ri, Baeksan-myeon but was shut down in the 1960s. Buan Daily Market was opened in 1965, and newer facilities were built in 1995. Later on, a rest area and parking lots were added to improve convenience to shoppers. In 2005, the market was designated as a traditional market.
