Background of Construction
The Hwimok Art Gallery was built on the site of the former Unho Elementary School with the purpose to promote cultural exchange and cultural and art education in the region, while discovering promising young artists and supporting the experimental phase of blending culture and the arts.
Development
The Hwimok Art Gallery opened on October 27, 2007. To celebrate its grand-opening, the gallery exhibited 107 artworks by the occidental painter Hwang Yong-yeop. The gallery was registered as the Jeollabukdo Art Gallery No. 3 in 2011.
Composition
The art gallery has two art exhibition halls on-site measuring over 40,000 ㎡ in area, which includes an outdoor sculpture park measuring 10,000 ㎡. The art gallery includes galleries, an art café, a creative studio, seminar rooms, as well as kitchen-installed lodging facilities, and souvenir shops.
Current Status
The Hwimok Art Gallery organizes invitational art exhibitions featuring well-known works by Korea’s leading artists and theme-based exhibits up to four times a year. The gallery’s permanent exhibitions include artworks by Ryu Gyeong-chae, Oh Seung-woo, Park Deuk-sun, and Park Yeong-seon. The outdoor sculpture garden displays sculptural works by Min Bok-jin, Koh Jeong-su, Kim Gyeong-seung, Lee Yeong-hak, Kim Jang-hee, and Lee In-su. The art gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except for Mondays and January 1. The admissions fee is KRW 3,000 for adults (KRW 2,000 for a group of more than 20 people), KRW 2,000 for grade-school students (KRW 1,000 for a group of more than 20 people). Children aged 3 to 7 enter for free. In 2020, the Hwimok Art Gallery hosted an exhibition featuring the works owned by the gallery, an art exhibition called “Play in the Art Collaboration,” and a Korea-China Art Exchange event called “Forever: Tian Chang Di Jiu (天長地久).”
