Summary
The Buan Silkworm Insect Science Center is an insect science museum that displays some 30,000 rare insects and is equipped with Korea’s most advanced electron microscopes. Along with the Exploration Hall and the Experience Hall, it is a key facility of Buan Silkworm Town.
Background of Establishment
In 2010, Buan Silkworm Town was established to foster a new tourism industry by connecting the regional sericulture industry, as it went through a gradual decline, with Buan’s local specialty mulberry products, Buan Silkworm Insect Science Center, a key facility of Buan Silkworm Town, was built to attract public attention to and understanding of insects by storing and displaying rare insects including silkworms.
Development
The center was opened on May 28, 2010.
Composition
The Buan Silkworm Insect Science Center consists of a storage space, an electron microscope hall, a special exhibition hall, and a photo zone (I am an entomologist!). The center’s storage space keeps about 30,000 specimens of rare native insects from Korea and around the world at the optimal temperature and humidity, and is also used to hold occasional special exhibitions. Its advanced electron microscope allows the users to magnify tiny objects by up to 1 million times and even to observe DNA. Each year, the special exhibition hall holds interesting themed exhibitions on rare insects from around the world, including insects of the Equator, the sea and butterflies, insects of the Byeonsan Peninsula, and the world’s largest insects (Guinness Book of Records). The photo zone (I am an Insect Specialist!) is a space where visitors can take a photo against the background of a small lab, just as if they were an insect specialist.
Current Status
