- Background of Construction
- The Keumkuwon Sculpture Park was founded when Kim Byeong-ryeol, the father of the famous sculptor Kim Oh-seong, built Keumkuwon Farm to establish a school for farmers in 1966. The plan to build a farmer’s school never materialized, but the site naturally turned into a sculpture park after Kim Oh-seong started to exhibit sculptural works.
- Development
- Korea’s first sculpture park was built in 1966. The park was registered as the Private Museum No. 2772 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 29, 2003. After the sculptor Kim Oh-seong moved to Seoul in 1991, the County Office has directly managed the artworks and privately installed an observatory in November.
- Composition
- The Keumkuwon Sculpture Park consists of an outdoor sculpture park, an exhibition hall, a small outdoor theater, the ‘Keumkuwon Observatory’, the management office-cum-residence, three ponds and the ‘Horned Holly Forest’. The outdoor sculpture park and the exhibition hall display over 150 sculptures including artworks by Kim Oh-seong. The array of sculptures was made from diverse materials, such as marble and granite in varying sizes. One large artwork measures 450 cm in height. The management office-cum-residence is found in the center of the park, and the ‘Horned Holly Forest’ features a harmonious array of camellia trees, hinoki cypress tress, and bamboo trees.
- Current Status
- The Keumkuwon Sculpture Park is open year-round, from dawn to an hour before sunset. Entrance fee is KRW 1,000 for children and KRW 2,000 for adults. Admission to the observatory is KRW 10,000 per person, and a group of five people or more requires booking in advance. The park organizes the ‘Daebul-nori Event’ on the first full moon of the year annually. With other various tourist attractions nearby, such as Chaeseok River, Suseongdang Shrine and Jeokbyeok River, the park is surely a place on the must-visit list.
