Definition
A beach located in Docheong-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Summary
Located in Byeonsan-bando Peninsula, Mohang Beach is also called “Mohang Tideland Beach.” The name of the town “Mohang” originated from the abundant cogongrass, or “mo” in Chinese, growing in the area, and a key route where ships sail by, or “hang,” hence the name “Mohang.” The beach is close to National Road No. 30 in Byeonsan-bando. From the Mohang Three-way intersecting with the Local Road No. 736 that traverses Byeonsan-bando, the beach is located about 2.6 km straight to southwest. The area surrounds Mt. Gapnam [413.3 m], and the beach is encompassed by a line lush pine trees, a landmark of Mohang Beach. Mohang Beach has been a popular destination not only for sunbathers but also families who enjoy fishing on the rock along the seashore and picking shellfish from the Tideland.
Development
Designated as a major tourist attraction in December 2000, Mohang Beach became a comprehensive resort equipped with various lodging facilities, oceanfront cafes, recreation parks, camping grounds, fishing areas as well as cultural, sports and recreation centers. Especially designed for family-unit tourists, the beach is close to a family hotel and a free camping ground right in front of the beach. In 2020, Mohang Beach and Uido Beach in Buan County were selected as the “Top 25 Beaches in Korea” by the Korean government.
Composition
Measuring about 250 meters in total length, Mohang Beach is smaller than other beaches in the region. The beach is equipped with a Management Office, bathrooms, drinking fountains, a parking lot and a broadcasting facility. The feel of this beach is not vast and grand but rather cozy and comfortable as a small beach with white sands wrapped by a natural cliff.
Current Status
Like Gosapo Beach, Mohang Beach is surrounded by a lush pine forest, and in front of the beach is a deck where visitors can set up tents. While there, visitors can try picking shellfish at the nearby Mohang Tideland Experience Center. The area has been cleaned and modernized for convenience; roads are well-paved and the Mohang Haenaru Family Hotel is nearby. To the northwest of Mohang Beach are Sangnok Beach and Gyeokpo Beach, and to east are the National Byeonsan Natural Recreation Forest and the famous Gomso Salt Field. Other popular tourist attractions include the Saemangeum Seawall, Chaeseok River, Jeokbyeok River and Naesosa Temple.
Mohang Beach is located on Course No. 5 out of Masil-gil’s Coastal 8 Courses in Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun. The 5 Courses, about 5 ㎞ in length, are a coastal course overlooking a great ocean view. Masil-gil starts from Solseom Isle, passes by Forest Training Center and ends at Mohang Beach. In 2019, Mohang Beach celebrated “Mohang Summer Festival” for the third year. Supervised and organized by the Buan County branch of the Saemaeul Movement, the event aimed to promote Mohang Beach as a tourist attraction and to spur the local economy.
