- Summary
- Wido Island is called “Wi” meaning hedgehog in Chinese, because the shape of the island resembles a hedgehog. Wido Island is a real model of Yuldoguk in Heo Gyun’s Story of Hong Gildong. Wido is an island whose area spans 11㎢ and coastline measures 36km long. The island is 14km west of Gyeokpo Port. People can come and go between Wido and land using a passenger liner, and it takes about an hour each way. Wido Beach is a typical beach in the Wido Island region and is also called Hedgehog Beach. Wido Beach is situated 0.8km west of Wido-myeon Office in a straight line and is adjacent to Local Road 703 that covers the entire Wido.
- Development
- Opened in 1969, Wido Beach has a long history with development carried out after it was designated as a National Tourist Site by the Ministry of Transportation (currently Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) in October 1992.
- Composition
- Wido Beach consists of fine sand beach stretching over 1km, and it is suitable for family waterside excursion. Basic facilities including toilet, shower system, and camping grounds are offered, and there are pensions for accommodation in the neighborhood. Due to the uniqueness of the island, not many commercial facilities have been built, and the surrounding environment is clean.
- Current Status
- Wido Beach is a fine sand beach, with Gipeungeum Beach, Miyeonggeum Beach, and Nongeum Beach located southwest. Miyeonggeum Beach consists of pebble beach unlike Wido Beach. Wido Island is renowned for Magic Lily, which means the flowers cannot face their leaves. The Magic Lily takes on a single color such as pink or yellow, and white Magic Lily flowers bloom only in Wido in the world. The white Magic Lily is an attractive flower enticing tourists to visit Wido Island, and the flowers bloom from end of August until early September.
In Wido-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, the Magic Lily road and its habitat are set up around Wido Beach and roadside. In 2019, a “Wido Magic Lily Road Moonlight Walking Festival” was held, marking its 6th year, centered on Wido Beach. Events such as campfire, all-night walking looking at the moonlight, concert, and food mart were held during the festival.
