Summary
Buan Park is a theme park blending the concept of a folk village and a studio set for movies and dramas.
Development
The project to build Buan Park began since 2002 when Jeollabuk-dobuilt the entrance way as an infrastructure and Buan County offered the site for free, and the Korean National Broadcasting Station KBS planned and designed the studio set. The theme park, completed on July 14, 2005, was operated by KBS Art Vision until 2017 when the operation was donated to Buan County, North Jeolla province. The Buan County Office consigned the park’s management to another company, but a court battle ensued when the company in charge of the park’s operation failed to pay for the lease but unfairly reaped the profits. Buan County won the case in October, 2019 and has sought ways to run and manage the theme park.
Composition
Located in the site in Gyeokpo-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun covering 148,400 ㎡in total area, Buan Park is a studio set specializing in period dramas, fully equipped with 69 sets including the Joseon dynasty royal palace and residences for nobles and commoners. Based on in-depth studies into Korean history, the royal palaces found in the park are exact replicas of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. Befitting the era, there are towns of tile-roofed homes owned by nobles and thatch-roofed houses selling ceramics, herbal medicines, carpentry, and rice paper crafts, as well as a school, study hall, tea houses, a realistic marketplace, an open range for livestock, a pond, and fortress. Foremost, the set used as the Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace is a one of a kind in Korea.
Current Status
Since its opening in 2005, Buan Park has earned an excellent reputation as a new Mecca of film studio sets in Korea used as the backdrop of more than 150 movies and dramas. Constructed based on the thorough historical evidence, the set became famous as the backdrop of popular movies, such as “The King & The Clown”, “The Face Reader”, “Roaring Currents”, and “The throne”, and TV dramas, such as “Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-sin”, “Lee San, the Wind of the Palace”, “Dae Jo-yeong”, and “Jingbirok.” Especially since the 2019 Neflix drama “Kingdom”, which was shot here, sparked global interest in Korean culture and traditional Korean architecture, Buan Park has been known as a major attraction contributing to the Korean Wave. Located within a 2-kilometer radius from Buan’s major attractions, such as the Chaeseokgang Cliff, Gyeokpo Port, and Gyeokpo Beach, the theme park is easily accessible. After the closure for about a year of repairs, the park is open again. Buan County Office plans to continue to utilize Buan Park for movie & drama productions and for the education of Korean history to foreign visitors namely during the World Scout Jamboree event. Constructed based on historical evidence, the realistic replica of the ancient Korean city with Gyeongbokgung Palace and houses of nobles and commoners will surely serve as a first-rate educational site portraying the daily life of Koreans of that historical era for both local and foreign visitors.
