Definition
The beach that is located in Gyeokpo-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Summary
The Gyeokpo Beach is also called Chaeseokgang Beach as it skirts along the Chaeseokgang. In fact, many tourists come here to enjoy the splendid scenery of the Chaeseokgang and the beautiful sunset on the west coast of Korea.
Development
The Gyeokpo Beach is known for the location where the first resort (currently, SONO Bell Hotel & Resort) was built in the Byeonsan peninsula in 2008, through the modernization project in the area. Since the construction of the resort, other convenient facilities, such as restaurants, accommodations, large parking lots, and other infrastructures, have been built and the area has become a well-equipped tourist destination. In addition, it has excellent access to public transportation, as the Gyeokpo Intercity Bus Terminal is located within a short distance. In 2016, the Gyeokpo Beach was selected as “one of the top 20 clean beaches in Korea” by the Korea Tourism Organization.
Composition
Gyeokpo Beach has about a 500-meter-long white sandy beach. Although the beach is small, compared to other neighboring beaches, it has good conditions for the general public with a small difference between tides, and a gentle slope. The beach has a restroom, showers, and kitchen inside, while a campground and a free parking lot are situated nearby the beach.
Current Status
The Byeonsan Peninsula is geographically divided into the Outer Byeonsan and the Inner Byeonsan, and Gyeokpo Beach belongs to the Outer Byeonsan, along with Gosapo Beach, Sangnok Beach, and Mohang Beach. Gyeokpo Beach is adjacent to the National Road No. 30, and is about a 10 minute walk from the Gyeokpo Intercity Bus Terminal to the northwest. In addition, the Gyeokpo Beach is flanked by Chaeseokgang River on the left and Jeokbyeokgang River on the right. Therefore, the beach boasts its magnificent landscape combined with diverse tourism resources, including natural, historical, and scenic sites, as well as the beach. The Chaeseokgang and Jeokbyeokgang Cliffed Coasts in Buan were designated as the Scenic Site No. 13 by the Cultural Heritage Administration in November 2004. Although the scenic site is controlled under the government’s regulation like other natural monuments, the government supports the purchase of the private land and the maintenance work for the site and the neighboring area with the fund.
The Gyeokpo Beach belongs to the tour route No. 3 connecting Seongcheon to the Gyeokpohang Port among the Eight Byeonsan Masil-gil Coast Course Tour Routes in Buan. While walking along the coastal trail (Masil-gil) built around the Population of Machilus in Gyeokpo-ri, Buan and the Jeokbyeokgang River, tourists will find Gyeokpo Beach. Various commercial facilities are situated around the beach, including the Gyeokpohang Port and the Chaeseokgang Fish Market. The neighboring beaches to Gyeokpo Beach are Gosapo Beach to the north and Sangnok Beach to the south.
