Definition
An ecological park in Upo-ri, Julpo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Background of Construction
Julpo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do where the ecological park is located, is a town formed through reclamation work during the colonial period. It used to flourish as a port but came to stop functioning as one due to the accumulation of earth and sand. Each rainy season, the area is a coastal low land suffering from flood caused by heavy rain and high tide. A 1 km-long embankment was built on the outer side of Julpo Port through four years’ work, which was completed in 1999, to prevent flood. A retention basin was formed inside the seawall. The ecological park came to be formed on the tidal flat inside the Julpoman Bay.
It used to be the area where household wastewater flowed into the sea. Reed and cogon grass now fill the area, with a freshwater wetland formed here.
Development
In or around the early 2000s, reeds and halophytes started growing in colonies in the area, naturally providing the groundwork for forming an ecological park. Starting 2003, steps were taken one after another to name it Julpoman Tideland Ecological Park including the formation of a 4 km-long walk in the reed field. Care has been taken to help 20-plus native plants including spathulifolius, wild rose, foxtail, reed, seepweed, Salicornia herbacea, and Halophila beccarii halophytes grow well. Other types of wild plants/flowers have been planted to provide more to enjoy to visitors. In 2014, the ecological park was opened and is managed by the Buan-Gun Office.
Composition
The park (808,000 ㎡) has aquatic leisure facility, golf course, open baduk (go) place, food court, nature observation walkway, sculpture park, camping site, pensions, location where the TV drama Lovers in Prague was shot, soccer field, basketball court, foot-volleyball court, an office space, etc. A facility named Sudamdong is composed of a building for the observation of tideland ecological system, an indoor space for hands-on experience, and a lookout. The nature observation walkway is made up of a walkway through the field of reeds/eulalia, a maze garden, a halophyte garden, an ecological waterway through the tidal flat, and a path for the observation of tideland. The building for the observation of tideland ecological system features the microalgae, benthic organisms, fish, and halophytes found in the local tideland. It also has an ecological exhibition room, a film room, a photo zone, a clam shell handicraft exhibition room, a specimen exhibition room, and an atelier/library. The park boasts of camping site, parking lot for vans, pensions, and guesthouse [Sudamdong]. For visitors to spend a good time, the park also provides a variety of programs, such as rowing boats, dug-shaped pedal boats, bikes, golf course, fishing place, place for feeding fish, etc.
Current Status
Julpoman Tideland Ecological Park has become a favorite destination among picnickers and campers with its beautiful scenery, well-made walkways, and convenient ancillary facilities. Some scenes of the TV drama Lovers in Prague were shot here in 2005. The building that was used for shooting has become a cafe. The Julpoman Tideland, which is connected with the ecological park, was registered as a Ramsar site in 2010. It is a valuable ecological site with more than 100 species of algae, halophytes, and other inhabitants of tideland, functioning as experience center for alive tideland experience.
