Summary
The Tideland stretched in Julpoman Bay (45.5 ㎢) were registered as a Ramsar Wetland on February 1, 2010. The Tideland is composed of Gochang Tideland Reservation (10.4㎢), Buan Julpo Tideland Reservation (4.9㎢) and another tideland near Gochang-gun (30.2㎢). The Julpoman Bay Tideland is stretched across Upori, Julpo-myeon, Buan-gun and Yucheon-ri, Boan-myeon, Buan-gun. It is now authorized as accord with international wetland standard in Ramsar Convention. Before registered as a Ramsar Wetland, the government designated 4.9 ㎢ in Julpo-myeon, Buan-gun as a coastal wetland protection area under the Wetlands Conservation Act in December 15, 2006. In 2009, the government designated Julpoman Bay as Marine/Agricultural History/Culture Sphere-related Specified Area and approved the plan for the development of the area. Julpoman Bay is also called Gomsoman Bay, due to the close of Julpo Port and Gomso Port became flourish.
Natural Environment
Julpoman Bay is situated deep inland between Byeonsan and Seonunsan Mountain in Gochang. The distance between the innermost part of the bay and its entrance near the sea comes to about 20 ㎞, and the distance between the two sides of the bay comes to 7 – 9 ㎞. The size of the area comes to about a quarter of Saemangeum Seawall area.
Located at the upper part of the intertidal zone, the Julpo Bay mud flat has a colony of diverse halophytes formed including seepweed, Suaedaglauca, glasswort, Suaeda maritima Dumort, Coastal glossy plantain, Gmelin's saltbush, etc., looking as if an extensive red carpet is laid on the mud flat. The area is also rich in marine resources like milky fiddler crab, which is a Threatened Species, Class-II, sand crab, ghost crab, Parasesarma tripectinis, penicillate shore crab, surf clam, solen, gobiid fish, mudskipper, etc. crustacean, lugworm, mollusk, lamp shell, nematodes—a mud flat with biodiversity.
Julpoman Tideland Ecological Park
The Buan-Gun Office formed the Julpo Bay Tideland Ecological Park on an area measuring 808,000 ㎡ including 4.9 ㎢ designated as a Ramsar site to preserve Julpoman Bay Tideland and the natural surroundings through the work carried out between 2003 and 2018. Originally, Julpo Detention Pond with seawall was formed to protect the Julpo town from chronic flooding, spending a total of 4,490 million won between 1996 and 1999. Once regarded as barren land, the area turned into an ecopark with reeds and halophytes forming a colony around the early 2000s. Today, it serves as a site for acquiring firsthand knowledge about living mud flat.
Currently, 20-plus native plants including spathulifolius, wild rose, foxtail, reed, seepweed, Salicornia herbacea, and Halophila beccarii halophytes grow in the park. The Buan-Gun Office also made two ponds and three hills in the park, planted 100,000 wild flowers in 15 species and 600 trees (including pine and five other species), and formed a turf measuring 13,223 ㎡. The work for the formation of an ecopark has brought about a change in the local ecosystem. Dumb-claw-crabs are found throughout the area. Dragonflies are everywhere in the field of reeds. King crabs, sea breams, grey mullets, and gizzard shads inhabit here. Wildlife like badgers lives here. White-naped cranes, white herons, and guillemots visit here to gather food.

Major inhabitants of the area are: surf clam, solen, portunid crab, shore crab, mantis shrimp, Upogebia major, ghost crab, Ilyoplax pingi, sand crab, milky fiddler crab, Helice tridens tientsinensis, Helice tridens tridens, Parasesarma erythrodactylum (Hess), red-clawed crab, barnacle, Chthamalus challenger, Batillaria multiformis,  Cerithideopsilla djadjariensis, goby, mudskipper, shuttles hoppfish, Perinereis aibuhitensis, Periserrula leucophryna, seepweed, Suaeda glauca Bunge, glasswort, Suaeda maritima Dumort, Gmelin's saltbush, coastal glossy plantain, reed, etc.
