Byeonsan Oncheon Sanjang, a restaurant specializing in clam rice porridge, has been designated as a regional cuisine restaurant of Jeollabuk-do. The restaurant’s smooth and savory clam rice porridge is made with plenty of clams caught from the waters off Buan, various vegetables such as carrots, spring onions, mung beans, and garlic, and seasonings. The dish is freshly made for each order, so customers have to wait a while before it is served. The restaurant’s delicious spicy raw clam salad, which is prepared by mixing fresh vegetables with parboiled clams and a spicy sauce, is also popular among customers.
Background of Construction
Byeonsan Oncheon Sanjang was originally named Oncheonjang Inn. When the owner began serving freshly-made clam rice porridge to customers, the restaurant gained popularity and the owner switched from accommodation to restaurant services in 1993.
Development
Since its opening as a restaurant in 1993, Byeonsan Oncheon Sanjang has acquired diverse licenses and designations, including a patent for its own recipe of clam rice porridge, the Jeollabuk-do Quality Certification (Buy), certification as Korea’s first inventor of the clam rice porridge dish, and designation as a “delicious and clean restaurant of Korea” by the KTO.
Composition
The restaurant’s main dishes are clam rice porridge and spicy raw clam salad. The restaurant has about 300 seats and a parking lot with spaces for about 100 vehicles. It has been praised for its excellent restrooms, first-class kitchen, and fine food. An attractive pine forest and shelter are situated nearby.
Current Status
Byeonsan Oncheon Sanjang has been introduced as a delicious restaurant on numerous occasions by the national media including Korea’s major newspapers (JoongAng Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Hankook Ilbo, and Jeonbuk Ilbo), magazines, and broadcasting companies. It has also been designated as an official regional cuisine restaurant of Jeollabuk-do specializing in clam rice porridge; and has won first prize at the Buan Local Food Competition, and bronze prize at the Jeollabuk-do Food Competition in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Notably, it participated in the World Food Exhibition at COEX in Seoul, and at the National Regional Cuisine Contest in Daegu.
