Development
The Monkey School was opened on June 29, 2002 after the former Gamgyo Elementary School located in Gamgyo-ri, Sangseo-myeon, Buan-gun was remodeled as a theme park. In 2006, the Natural History Museum of the Monkey School was designated as the Jeollabuk-do Category 1 Museum No. 4 by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Composition
The Natural History Museum of the Monkey School owns a total of 1,153 units under four categories, including Fossils, Rough Gemstones, Precious Gemstones, and Wild Animals. Main facilities include the Tropical Exhibition Hall, Natural History Museum, Bird Museum, Alligator Zoo, World Dream Circus Hall, Kids’ School, Water-wheeled Boat Ride, Monkey Performance Hall, Herb Arboretum, Japanese Monkey Park, Kids’ Ani Farm, and Fishing Park, etc.
Current Status
The Monkey School operates live performances and circus acts as its main entertainment program. The theme park also operates the Herbal Arboretum featuring a wide range of herbal plants as well as the Natural History Hall where children can experience live animals and plants. It also offers amusement rides, such as the water-wheeled boat, and play zones including the Alligator Zoo, Jungle Gym, Kids Ani Farm, Fishing Park, Sand Art Park and more. The Natural History Museum features the Fossil Hall on the first floor and the Rough and Precious Gemstone Halls on the second floor. The Fossil Hall displays fossils dating back to the Paleozoic and the Cenozoic era, while the Gemstone Hall displays various rough and precious gemstones from Africa, Europe, and South America.
