Definition
A Korean archery range located in Jindong-ri, Haengan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Background of Construction
The Simgojeong Traditional Archery Range was originally the official archery range of the local government office, and included a training pavilion built by the archers during the late Joseon period. The pavilion was rebuilt several times over the years, and was restored as part of a newly developed traditional archery range between December 2010 and December 2012.
Development
Simgojeong was originally built as Hyangsadang Hall in Dongjung-ri, Buan-eup in 1807 (the 7th year of the reign of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty), and was renamed as Gwandeokjeong Pavilion in 1840 (the 6th year of the reign of King Heonjong). However, the pavilion was demolished, and a new archery pavilion with a thatched roof was built at the foot of Seonghwangsan Mountain in 1892 (the 29t hyear of the reign of King Gojong).
In 1929, during the Japanese colonial period, a new pavilion named Simgojeong was built (at San1, Seooe-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do) with funds donated by Shin Jong-sun, Kim Yeon-wook, Lee Yeong-du, Shin Seong-seok, Kim Tae-hyeong, and Lee Yeong-il. However, the pavilion was demolished in 1943 by the Japanese authorities in order to build a Shinto shrine there. Two decades later, in 1966, Simgojeong Pavilion was rebuilt yet again by Shin Yeong-seon, Lee Hui-nam, Kim Jae-nam, and Hwang Geum-seok at the entrance to Seorim Park. More recently, it was relocated to the archery range inside the Buan Sports Park, which was newly built in December 2012. The opening ceremony of the Simgojeong Traditional Archery Range was held on December 22, 2012 (groundbreaking in December 2010). Its construction cost KRW one billion, of which KRW 200 million was paid by the State, KRW 300 million by the province, and KRW 500 million by the military.
Composition
The Simgojeong Traditional Archery Range (26,753m3) consists of a shooting platform, an office, a lounge, and a kitchen. It has four targets, which are situated 145 meters from the shooting platform.
Current Status
As the Simgojeong Traditional Archery Range is equipped with excellent facilities, it is used as a training range by Buan County’s traditional archers, who have achieved some great results in national competitions. It has also been used to host such events as Buan County’s National Traditional Archery Competition and the Honam Chiljeong Archery Competition, as well as to promote Buan, attract tourists, and contribute to the local economy.
