Definition
A historic site near Wolmyeongam Hermitage located in Unsan-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Origin of the Name
“Nakjodae” refers to a flat topography from which the sunset can be viewed.
Natural Environment
The rock in Unsan-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun can be found on the southern ridge of Ssangseonbong Peak (459 m) of Naebyeonsan Mountain southwest of Byeonsan Peninsula. To the south of Ssangseonbong Peak, the second highest peak on Byeonsan Peninsula is the Buddhist temple called Wolmyeongam at 377 meters above sea level. Nakjodae Overlook can be found about 200 meters a straight away from the temple.
Current Status
Wolmyeongam Nakjodae Overlook at 377 meters above sea level is one of the eight most beautiful places to observe the sunset on Byeonsan Peninsula on the West Coast. From the ridge of the mountain, Wolmyeongam Temple faces the east making the site ideal for observing the sunrise in the morning, hence the poetic name of “Wolmyeongmuae,” or “a dance of the bright sun and clouds (at dawn)”, while Nakjodae faces the west for observing the sunset. Walk for about 20 minutes along the trail from the peak behind Wolmyeongam Hermitage to find a large rock soaring into the sky. This spot is called “Nakjodae.” There are two trails to ascend to Wolmyeongam Nakjodae Rock: one from the Namyeochi ticket booth in Junggye-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun and the other from the three-way intersection in Bongnaegok near the Jiksocheon Stream. Anywhere along the West Coast offers a viewpoint of the sunset; however, the most spectacular view of the West Sea dotted with beautiful islands from this particular mountain top has long been acclaimed as the best out of the eight most popular viewpoints in Byeonsan. The view of the sunset from Wolmyeongam Nakjodae Overlook, along with that from Naksansa Temple in Sokcho on the East Coast, boasts Korea’s top two beautiful seascapes featuring the sun.
