Summary
Buan Indoor Gymnasium provides residents of Buan County with indoor spaces for various sporting activities shielded from the elements. As it serves as a venue for a wide range of indoors events, the gymnasium contributes to improving the image and economic development of Buan region.
Background of Construction
The construction of Buan Indoor Gymnasium was not possible without the support from the Korean government and Buan County Office in Jeollabuk-do, which took into account Buan residents’ keen interest in constructing an indoor sport facility. When Buan County Office constructed Buan Sports Park, it also built various other sports facilities, including the Indoor Gymnasium and Indoor Swimming Pool in the same area for better synergy and increase the accessibility for residents. Buan Sports Park was built to provide Buan residents with opportunities to participate in various sports activities and meet their needs to use sports facilities; to establish a facility to host various sporting events designed to augment the spirit of unity and harmony among Buan residents; and to boost the physical fitness of residents and economical and cultural development of the region. Buan Sports Park was designed to meet the area’s need for a large-scale sports facility, and the Buan Indoor Gymnasium was a major part of the overall plan. 
Development
Buan Indoor Gymnasium was officially open on April 22, 2010.
Composition
Buan Indoor Gymnasium was built with an investment of KRW 14 billion (KRW 4.2 billion from the Korean government, KRW 600 million from the provincial office, and KRW 9.2 billion from the county office). The gymnasium is a super-modern building, measuring 6,536 ㎡ in total floor space, which includes one basement floor and two floors above-ground. The gymnasium is equipped with stationary bleachers for 1,500 people and retracting bleachers for 500 people, or 2,000 seats in total. Other facilities include Sound and Lighting Control Room, Referees’ Room, Waiting Room for Athletes, Dispensary, and Broadcasting Studio.
Current Status
Buan Indoor Gymnasium plays an important role in leveraging the benefits of sports in the daily life of Buan residents. It is the key venue for various sporting events organized annually by the Jeollabuk-do, Buan County as well as the Korean government. National events include the Buan County Mulberry Cup Badminton Championship (since 2015), the National Maechang Calligraphy Contest (since 2015), the Buan Rice Cup National Table Tennis Championship (since 2014), and the National Taekwondo Competition. Events regularly organized by the province include the Buan Governor Cup Jeollabukdo Table Tennis Championship, and events organized by the county include the Buan Citizen Sporting Event for indoor sports, among others. Buan Indoor Gymnasium also frequently serves as a venue for political and cultural events in the Buan region.
