Definition
A local festival held annually in early May in Maechang Park in Seooi-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun and throughout Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Summary
As eco-conscious trails throughout the country appreciated by residents, Buan County kicked off the project to build Masil-gil in Byeonsan. By 2009, the county completed Course No. 5 and by 2014, Course No. 8. Masil-gil Course No. 1 includes Jogami Paechong-gil; Course No. 2 Norumok Sangsawha-gil; Course No. 3 Jeokbyokgang Noeul-gil; Course No. 4 Haeneomi Solseom-gil; Course No. 5 Mohang Gaetbeol Cheheom-gil; Course No. 6 Ssanggyejae Ahopgubi-gil; Course No. 7 Gomso Sogeumbat-gil, and Course No. 8 Cheonggagol Jayeon Saengtae-gil. Masil-gil in Byeonsan has become a major ecological attraction, and the annual Buan Masil Festival is part of the branding project to promote the trail.
Origins and Background of the Festival
With the aim to promote Buan County and boost the local economy with the festival as an attraction, the inaugural festival kicked off in 2012.
Content of Events
The First Buan Masil Festival was held at Buan Sports Park, the main venue. Under the theme “Bring Your Happy Company to Masil in Buan,” it took place on May 4 through 6, 2012. Main programs involved the opening ceremony and performances as follows: 1. the Great Buan Masil Parade; 2. the One-Act Play “Let’s Go Out to See Maechang and Masil”; 3. live gigs featuring orchestral music and signers; 4. Children’s Day Osaek Madang Grand Event; 5. Making a 99 Meter-long Rice Roll; 6. Masil Children’s Rhyme Contest, Sangbaekji Fashion Show; 7. Masil Puppet Show; 8. Masillak Youth Arts Contest; 9. Pureun Music Concert; 10. Nongak Percussion Competition; 11. Dangsan-nori Demonstration; 12. Rhododendron Bonsai Exhibition; 13. Buan Traditional Earthenware Exhibition; 14. Buan Life History Museum; 15. Buan Essay and Poem Exhibition; 16. Masil Food Village and experiential programs (i.e. Mulberry Village, Doul Totem Pole Exhibition, Making Blue Celadons, Gomso Salt-making, etc.); 17. Youth Culture Festival and Silkworm Town Open Concert. The 2nd Buan Masil Festival involved the Byeonsan Masil-gil Walking Contest, Masil Cup Sports Competition, Buan Market Culture Event, and Buan Blue Celadon Special Exhibition. The 7th Buan Masil Festival was organized under the theme “May Picnic to Buan in Everyday Life” at Maechang Park from May 4 through 6, 2019 and involved 1. Masil Dance Contest; 2. Sand Art; 3. Opening Ceremony Performance; 4. Masil Daedong Hanmadang; 5. Masil Dance Parade Contest; 6. Masil Open Music Concert; 7. OST on Spring Days; 8. Wido Ttibaetnori Reenactment; 9. Masil On Water Color Madang; 10. Let’s Go After the 2023 World Jamboree; 11. Starlight Masil; 12. Busking and Flash Mob; 13. Korea’s Best Nongak Performance and Masil Traveling Theater Troupe. Auxiliary programs were the 2019 Buan Food and Taste Festival, Buan Masil Tour Bus, National Nongak Contest, Strawberry Picking Experience and Walking along Byeonsan Masil-gil.
Current Status
The 8th Buan Masil Festival was set to take place from May 2 through 5,2020 with the theme “Masil Connects Towns and Embraces Joy,” however it was canceled due to Covid-19. The festival is supervised by Buan Masil Festival Committee (led by Kim Jin-tae) and hosted by Buan County. At the time in 2019, the organizer of the festival consisted of two organizations led by the Secretary-General and General Director under the Committee Chairman. Under the two branches, tasks were divided into the general division, planning division, protocol and PR division, event division and divisions in charge of volunteers, the environment and ecosystem, experiential programs, facilities and modes of transportation. In 2017, Buan Masil Festival was selected as the outstanding festival in Jeollabuk-do, the iconic festival of Jeollabuk-do in 2018, and repeating in 2019 as the outstanding festival in Jeollabuk-do.
