Background of Establishment
The Korea Water Resources Corporation established the Buan Dam Water Cultural Center at the Buan Dam Square as a cultural space designed to promote water as our most precious resource, with a budget of KRW 4.1 billion.
Development
Construction work began in October 2007, and the center was opened in time for the 17th World Day for Water on March 20, 2009.
Composition
The Buan Dam Water Cultural Center (building area: 1,849.03m2/exhibition area:1,349.7m2) consists of three floors above ground and one basement level. Its main facilities include Exhibition Hall 1 on the first floor and Exhibition Halls 2 & 3 and Theater on the second floor. Exhibition Hall 1 (Water of Life) introduces basic information about water and displays the aquatic and waterside ecology system of Buan. It explains how tap water is produced, and provides an exciting water experience program that enables visitors to experience and understand the main principles of the hydropower system. Exhibition Hall 2 (Buan Dam of Life) features a space where visitors can view images of the local villages before and after they were submerged by the dam construction project. Exhibition Hall 3 (Buan’s Life and Culture) screens a video about the mysterious and precious nature of water.
Current Status
The center’s opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Admission is free. It is closed on Mondays, Seollal (Korean New Year’s Day) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day). Neighboring attractions include the Wildflower Shelter, Buan Dam Management Office, Buan Lake Literary Garden, and an outdoor stage with a water fountain.
