Summary
Seulji Bakery opened in 2000 to introduce authentic steamed buns named after the family’s daughter. The bakery sold Korean traditional steamed buns using 100% locally sourced flour, red bean, Korean traditional yeast enzyme specimens, and malt, becoming a major attraction in Buan County. The shop’s iconic item “Osaek-jjinppang,” or “Five-colored Steamed Bun,” made of Korean flour, red bean, pumpkin, mulberry leaf, mulberry, and black rice was patented in 2012. In addition to Five-colored Steamed Bun, the bakery aims to satisfy diverse consumer segments with new items like Fresh Cream and Cream Cheese Steamed Buns, while contributing to the rise of added-value in local produce and income in farming towns by making bread using 100% locally sourced produce, such as flour, red bean, and salt. Seuljine Jjinppang Seulji Bakery, which opened in August 2017, is the second branch of Seulji Bakery.
Development
In 2000 Seuljine Anheung Jjinppang was founded, and in 2007 the trademark “Seuljine Anheung Jjinppang” was registered. After manufacturing steamed buns using locally sourced flour, in 2008, the bakery began manufacturing steamed buns using Korean red bean and opened an owner-run store and a franchise. In 2010, the name was changed to Seuljine Jjinppang. In 2012 the bakery registered “Seuljine Jjinppang” as a trademark and applied for a patent for “Five-colored Steamed Bun.” In 2014, the store was designated as an outstanding store specializing in children’s snacks, and the patent for “Five-colored Steamed Bun” was granted. In 2015, “Seuljine Jjinppang” was registered as a corporation, and in August 2017, Seulji Bakery was opened in Jinseo-ri, Jinseo-myeon, Buan-gun.
Major Projects and Tasks (Activities)
Steamed Bun Seulji Cafe manufactures and sells steamed buns using Korean ingredients. In June 2009, the bakery was recognized for developing a new technology to make steamed buns with a modern twist as opposed to the traditional buns and was chosen as an owner-operated company with “Proud New Knowledge” by the Korea Association for Knowledge Education. The bakery also received the “Award of Excellence Judged by Consumers” at the Jeonju Fermented Food Expo in 2012, the Award Certificate for Model Small Businesses by the Small and Medium Business Administration, and the Grand Innovation Prize at Jeonbuk Techno Park in 2014. In the same year, the steamed buns were exported to Japan, U.K., Canada, Vietnam and the Philippines, and next year, the brand’s achievement was recognized by the Plaque of Achievement from the Buan Industry Convergence Project, the Grand Prize for Knowledge Innovation, the Grand Prize for Buan County Industry Promotion, the Grand Prize at the Jeonbuk Agricultural Processed Food Contest, and the Award Certificate by the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea’s Health & Welfare Committee. In 2016, Seulji Bakery won the Grand Prize at the Outstanding Agricultural Food Commercialization Contest and in 2018, won the Order of Industrial Merit in the Small Enterprise category at the 2018 Merit-worthy Korea Small Enterprises Award Ceremony hosted by the Small Enterprise and Market Service and the Korea Federation of Small Enterprises. In September 2019, Seulji Bakery was selected as the Convergent Agricultural Enterprise of the Month by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs.
Current Status
Seulji Bakery has been operated by three brothers and sisters who inherited the business from their father, who founded the business. Located near one of the county’s major attractions Gomso Salt Farm in Jinseo-ri, Jinseo-myeon, Steamed Bun Seulji Cafe is the second branch of Seuljine Jjinppang located in Seooe-ri, Buan-eup, Buan-gun. The revenue of Steamed Bun Seulji Cafe increased from KRW 333 million in 2017 to KRW 899 million in 2018, and the number of visitors from 32,000 in 2017 to 75,000 in 2018, and 100,000 in 2019.
Historical Significance
Steamed Bun Seulji Cafe has gained an excellent reputation as a company specializing in flour products by practicing the Save Our Flour campaign and contributing to improving self-sufficiency of locally produced flour, the goal set by the Korean government. The company’s outstanding performance included exports of steamed buns to Japan, Canada, United Kingdom, Vietnam and the Philippines.
