Definition
A center packed with shops and exhibition and experience facilities related to Gomso fermented seafood products, located in Gomso-ri, Jinseo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Background of Construction
The production of Gomso fermented seafood began when people started mixing fish and seafood from Chilsan’s fishing grounds (Buan, Gochang, and Yeonggwang) with Gomso salt and developed them into a variety of processed products. As the local fermented seafood products are made with the excellent sun-dried salt from the Gomso Salt Field, they are regarded as high-quality products. The Gomso Fermented Seafood Center was established to develop Gomso fermented seafood into well-being fermented fishery products, and to transform the area around Gomso in Jinseo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do into a center of the fermented seafood industry, and thereby contribute to revitalizing the local commercial area.
Development
Construction of the Gomso Fermented Seafood Center began in October 2008, and it was opened to the public on November 5, 2011.
Composition
The Gomso Fermented Seafood Center is a two-story building with a land area of 8,561.6m2 and a total floor area of 4,832.07m2. Current Status
The Gomso Fermented Seafood Center is managed by the Department of Maritime and Fishery of Buan County, Jeollabuk-do. It comprises two types of facilities – management and sales facilities. The management facilities, run by the county directly, include an experience & learning hall, a promotional exhibition hall, and a kimchi experience hall. The experience & learning hall offers various experience programs such as making tooth paste with Gomso salt, making a clay memo holder, and making three-colored salt with mulberries, mulberry leaves, and herbs (salicomia herbacea). The promotional exhibition hall promotes and displays fermented seafood and sun-dried salt products. The kimchi experience hall is a facility where visitors can learn all about and experience fermented seafood and kimchi. The sales facilities are rented to merchants who sell fermented seafood in the center’s shops and serve various dishes in its restaurant. The main Gomso fermented seafood products include fish sauces, fermented seafood seasoned with condiments, and general fermented seafood. The Gomso Seafood Fermentation Festival is held each year in the vicinity of the Gomso Multipurpose Area in Jinseo-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do to promote Gomso fermented seafood products.
