Definition
A geosite of the Jeollabuk-do West Coast National Geopark in Docheong-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Natural Environment
The Seokpo tuff distributed across Mohang consists of a faint layer from the bulk phase, small gravel-sized coarse fragments from medium sand, and volcanic ash soil from find sand. With its poor sorting, a tuff breccia with a thickness of 4.5 meters and composed of large fragments of boulders (with a maximum diameter of 1.5 meters) has formed on the beach at Mohang. This site also contains a type of quartz consisting of a fish-bone vein system, peperite, welded structure, and cylindrical pipe structure that usually develops in volcanic tuff containing pumice. A quartz fish-bone vein system forms when two veins of quartz formed by a hydrothermal process of deposited volcanic tuff cross each other; wherein one vein system develops by penetrating another. As this resembles a pattern of fish bones, it is called a “quartz fish-bone vein system.” The presence of a cylindrical pipe structure, which was formed by volcanic gas escaping during the accumulation of volcanic ash, is an interesting feature of the Geopark that helps visitors to understand volcanic activity.
A peperite is a type of volcanoclastic rock that is formed when magma comes into contact with wet, non-solidified sediment as the moisture of the sediment boils, water vapor explodes or sediment is combined with lava. During such a process, irregular masses of lava and sediment solidify. However, the peperite near Mohang Beach formed at the interface between volcanic tuff and neutral dikes, which suggests that peperite can also form in volcanoclastic rock as well as sedimentary rock, which contains water or moisture. However, experts hold divergent opinions on this matter.
Current Status
Mohang was designated as one of six geosites (Jikso Falls, Jeokbyeokgang Cliffs, Chaeseokgang Cliffs, Solseom Island, Mohang Beach, and Wido Island) located in the Jeollabuk-do West Coast National Geopark in Buan-gun on September 13, 2017.
