Definition
A mountain located on the border between Baegnyeong-ri, Haseo-myeon and Junggye-ri, Byeonsan-myeon in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.
Origin of the Name
The peak is said to have been named Uisangbong because it was once the site of Uisangam Hermitage, which is believed to have been built by the Buddhist priest Uisang of Silla (625-702) at its eastern foot. According to Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Newly Augmented Geographical Survey of the Territory of the Eastern Kingdom), Uisang lived at Uisangam Heritage. The mountain is also known by the names “Gisangbong” and “Macheondae”, which originate from a poem written by Heo Jin-dong (1525-1610) when he climbed up Uisangbong Peak during the mid-Joseon period.
Natural Environment
Uisangbong Peak, situated on the border between Baegnyeong-ri (northern part) of Haseo-myeon and Junggye-ri (southern part) of Byeonsan-myeon in Buan-gun, is the highest peak (508.6 m) on the Byeonsan Peninsula. With Uisangbong Peak at the center, the Inner Byeonsan area of Byeonsanbando National Park largely consists of mountainous topography, including Bukognyeobong Peak (354.7 m), Ugeumsan Mountain (329.0 m), Sangyeobong Peak (395 m), Bukognyeobong (434.4 m), Yonggakbong Peak (370.0 m), Sebong Peak (433.0 m), Gwangeumbong Peak (424.5 m), Sinseonbong Peak (488.2 m), Galmabong Peak (486.4 m), Mangpodae (494.1 m), Bunchodae (422 m), Nakjodae Overlook (447 m), and Ssangseonbong Peak (460.7 m).
Current Status
Busauibang, the chamber in which Buddhist Priest Jinpyo practiced asceticism, is located in the southeastern cliff of Uisangbong Peak. According to Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Newly Augmented Geographical Survey of the Territory of the Eastern Kingdom), a Silla monk named Jinpyo lived in this rocky chamber, which could only be reached by a 30-meter-long wooden ladder suspended from the top of the cliff.
At present, a military facility is located on the summit of Uisangbong Peak. Eosudae is located to the east of the mountain; Byeorakbawi Rock to its west; Saemangeum Reclamation Area to its north; Buan Dam to its southwest; and, after the Baekcheon Stream, Bongnae Valley and Hoeyang Valley to its south. Local Road No. 736 runs via the mountain in the east-west direction along the Baekcheon Stream.
